Our Ripper family are from the parish of Breage in Cornwall. In the 16th and 17th centuries a branch of the family lived on a tenement in the parish, named Crawle. Its history has been captured from documents such as estate maps and leases.

Thomas Ripper of Crawle (c1600-1661)

The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Ripper who died in 1661 has provided an insight into the lives of the family in the seventeenth century. The will was exhibited at the Stannary Court in order to resolve the ownership of a mine and tin works.

Tregonning Hill overlooks Breage, Crawle and the land where the Ripper family lived, farmed and mined. In the 1500s the earliest known commercial activity of the Ripper family was tin streaming on the eastern flank of the hill.
